Altra Trail Shoe Comparison
The Altra Lone Peak 9+, Timp 5, and Olympus 6 are helluva popular trail running shoes, each designed for distinct runner requirements. So let's take a break & whittle down the various models to see what you need.
Lone Peak 9+: Known for its versatility, it has moderate cushioning (25mm stack height) and a wide toe box, ideal for that natural foot movement, a key element of Altra. The balanced design suits various trail conditions, from moderate to technical, and works well for both running and hiking. The grippier outsoles on the 9+ provides super reliable traction, making it the winner for mixed distances.
Timp 5: Designed for longer runs and technical trails, it offers a snugger, more secure fit with a bit more cushioning (29mm stack height). Its prioritizes stability and responsiveness, performing like a champ on uneven terrain where precision is vital. Probably less suited for hiking but it shines on extended trail adventures.
Olympus 6: Built for max cushioning (33mm stack height), it’s the top choice for long-distance runners tackling rugged & gnarly terrain. The high stack and robust protection absorb impact on rocky trails giving your legs some comfort. One would think its bulkier feel may be less agile for technical sections or shorter runs, but our reviewer swears by it on the shorties.
The Vanish Carbon 2 is speed beast with a carbon fiber plate, lightweight foam, and increased flexibility to help you crush PRs and negative splits.
A high-performance trail running shoe with sticky Vibram Megagrip outsole, EExpure foam cushioning, and a tough Matryx upper. Perfect for all runners, it loves technical trails and faster paces.
THE HARDY QUEEN OF SOUTH AFRICAN MILERS!
2025 will be remembered for one of the craziest ultra-trail years based on Nicolette Griffioen 100 mile performances to date...and it's only July. Having won the RMB Ultra-trail Drakensberg & George MUT by UTMB in under 30 days, she just went completely nuts & won the MacMac 100 Miler. Which means this is her 3rd Miler win in 72 days i.e. 3 months. That is a ridiculous Miler win every 3.5 weeks
A religious Inov8 runner since 2011, her current shoe of choice is the Inov8 TrailFly Speed Wides. we can only look forward to seeing what she decides on running next. Could it be UTMB® - Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc in Chamonix or a Ultra-Trail Cape Town
